What is abdominoplasty?

Dr. Juan Gordillo is a specialist in abdominoplasty in Mexico. It´s a cosmetic surgery that is performed in order to remove accumulated fat and excess skin from the navel to the pubis. In addition, in most cases it is recommended to repair separated or weakened muscles, thus creating a firmer, smoother and more aesthetic abdominal profile.

This surgery can be performed together with other procedures to improve body contour such as: breast or buttock lift, liposculpture, breast augmentation or facial surgery such as rhinoplasty.

Procedure

Abdominoplasty is performed in the operating room, with an approximate duration of 4 to 5 hours and general anesthesia is used to prevent the patient from feeling any pain or discomfort.

Step 1. Anesthesia or intravenous sedation is applied

Step 2. The surgeon makes a horizontal incision in the area between the navel and the pubic hairline. The size and shape of the incision will depend on the degree of correction needed.

Step 3. Through the incision the surgeon corrects the weakened abdominal muscles, removes excess fat, skin and tissue. In case there is excess skin in the upper abdomen, it may be necessary to make a second incision around the navel.

Step 4. The surgeon sutures the skin and muscle incisions with invisible sutures to leave fine, hard to see scars.

Abdominoplasty allows to get a firm abdominal contour, proportionate to body weight and body type, in addition to recovering from rectus diastasis: the separation in the abdomen central area that usually occurs as a result of pregnancy and weight fluctuations.

Benefits

The tummy tuck final results may take a week or two in order to be seen. However, it has the advantages of achieving a flatter and more toned silhouette, with a contoured waist, which cannot be achieved through diet and exercise.

Compared to liposculpture, where small deposits of fat are removed, abdominoplasty removes large deposits of fat and skin, which are not removed by diet and exercise. Corrects rectus diastasis, marks the muscles and reduces the waist.

Abdominoplasty types

  • Mini tummy tuck. It is a surgery indicated for people with little excess skin and fat.

  • Complete abdominoplasty. It is the recommended surgery for cases with greater excess skin, but with little fat. For example, women who have had multiple pregnancies, or people who have lost a significant amount of weight.

  • Extended tummy tuck. It is a surgery in which the trunk´s contour is also restored where there is excess skin below and above the navel, on the sides, crests and in the lower part of the back.

  • “Fleur-de-lis” tummy tuck. Also called anchor abdominoplasty because the scar is wider. It is a surgery that is sugested in cases of severe flaccidity in the abdominal wall, which is usually secondary to a bariatric procedure to have a great weight loss.

  • Circumferential abdominoplasty. It is a complete remodeling surgery of the body contour. It is recommended for cases of severe flaccidity in which previous surgeries are not enough to correct the patient’s anatomical alterations.

With Dr. Gordillo you will find Soring ultrasound assisted liposuction. Whose advantage over conventional liposuction is that it is selective for fat, since it emulsifies or melts it, does not damage collagen and elastin fibers, favors skin retraction, does not damage the nerves, vessels, muscles or skin, and leads to a faster and less painful recovery. And above all, it provides a more aesthetic result and a natural contour in the medium and long term.

The difference between traditional liposculpture with or without ultrasound and HD, High Definition or 4D is the marking of muscular divisions to obtain a more defined abdomen.

Ideal candidates for abdominoplasty

Abdominoplasty is indicated for people who wish to correct the consequences of considerable weight loss, especially the loss of skin firmness that has caused sagging and an unattractive appearance and with which they do not feel satisfied.

People with obesity who underwent bariatric surgery, or who lost weight due to a change in eating and lifestyle habits, as well as women who have had fluctuations in weight and volume due to pregnancy.

The ideal candidates for a tummy tuck are:

  • People who lost skin elasticity due to pregnancy.

  • People who are left with a lot of accumulated skin after weight loss.

  • People who cannot improve the abdomen appearance through diet and exercise.

  • Non-smokers or patients willing to give up tobacco for at least 2 months.

  • People committed to maintaining a stable weight.

However, not everyone is a candidate for a tummy tuck as it is recommended to have a BMI (body mass index) below 34.5. This is because when there is too much fat under the skin, satisfactory results are not obtained, since only approximately 7 kilos of fat can be extracted. More quantity extracted can put the patient’s health at risk. Dr. Gordillo considers different factors such as muscle mass, overweight or obesity, and skin quality and is the one who will tell you if this procedure is right for you or not.

Pre and post operative indications

Once Dr. Gordillo has determined that the patient is a candidate for abdominoplasty in Mexico, he will request preoperative tests with complete blood tests to ensure that there will be no cardiovascular, pulmonary or coagulation problems.

In people witha lot of overweight or moderately obese, it will recommend losing weight through a healthy diet and exercise. Two weeks before surgery they will have to refrain from tobacco and alcohol consumption so that it does not affect wound healing. And in the days before the procedure, they will be asked to stop taking aspirin or other medications with salicylates.

After abdominoplasty, the recovery is tolerable since the discomfort caused by the surgery is minimal. The surgeon usually recommends to rest at home for a recovery period of 4 to 5 days, and daily activities can be resumed 7 to 10 days later.

Immediately after surgery, a compressive bandage is placed, which is removed after 24 hours. And two drains for serous material to come out, which is removed after 48 hours. When removing the bandage and the drains, the use of a special girdle is recommended. It has to be worn day and night for at least eight weeks. It can only be removed for short periods to bathe.
The tummy tuck results will not be seen until after 3 to 4 months, when the area has subsided. But from the beginning you can have a clear idea of the results. After 6 months you have a complete recovery and you can return to your sports routine.
