What is facelift or rhytidectomy?

The facelift or rhytidectomy is a cosmetic surgery to reduce the aging signs in the neck and face, which become very noticeable over time. Some of these signs are:

• Loss of firmness in the middle part of the face.
• Folds in the lower part of the eyelid.
• Deep creases that extend from the nose to the corner of the lips.
• Accumulated fat that has managed to move.
• Double chin due to loss of muscle tone in the lower part of the face.
• Double chin caused by loose skin and accumulated fat under the chin and jaw.

With a facelift you will be able to delay the biological clock and appear 8 to 10 years younger than your real biological age, since the muscle tone is reaffirmed, the skin is smoothed and the facial contour is restored.

This type of procedures focused on rejuvenation can be carried out together with others, such as brow lift, face lift, to correct sagging or very noticeable furrows in the forehead, eliminate bags under the eyes with eyelid surgery, or by a neck liposuction to remove fat under the chin.

Rhytidectomy before and after

What is the facelift procedure like?

The facelift is a surgery that can be performed with local anesthesia when it is done partially (on the cheeks or neck), or with general anesthesia if a complete facelift is performed on the entire face and with a complementary surgery.

The incisions in the procedure depend on the technique to be used. For example, in a full facelift, an incision is made at the hairline that runs down the forehead, past the ears, and under the chin. In a partial facelift, a small incision is made in the area to be treated, for example under the chin for neck lift.

In general, with a facelift, the skin is raised, the muscles and tissues are tightened, the face and neck´s fat is extracted or redistributed, the excess skin is removed, it is repositioned on the contours of the face and the wound is sewn with invisible sutures.

The time in which the facelift is performed is between two and four hours, and can be longer if other surgeries are performed at the same time.

In which cases is a facelift recommended?

A facelift is a surgery that is recommended for almost anyone over the age of 40, or who is uncomfortable with the signs of aging on their face. Although, in men it is usually recommended from the age of 50, and in women from the age of 45.

As we age, the face´s appearance and shape is altered due to age related changes: sagging, elasticity loss, changes in fat distribution, drooping cheekbones, folds in the eyes, nose and corners of the lips, among others.

However, a facelift is not recommended for superficial wrinkles, sun-damaged skin, creases above the upper lip, or accumulation of fat on the eyelids that forms eye bags.

How long does recovery take?

Recovery time varies depending on the type of lift and if additional surgeries were performed. In general, you will need rest for 10 to 14 days and follow the surgeon’s instructions for postoperative pain management.

Check with your surgeon if you practice extreme sports or high-intensity physical activity to take preventive measures such as avoiding direct sun exposure.

Frequent questions

Facelift in the United States costs between $4,000 USD and $12,000 USD. Being a cosmetic surgery, it is not included in the insurance plans. In Mexico, the price range is between $2,000 USD and $6,000 USD, depending on the type of facelift.

The effect duration of the facelift is not fixed since the surgery does not stop the aging of the skin, but it does delay it between 8 and 10 years. This means that you will look younger, and if you take care of your skin, maintain good eating habits, skin care routine, exercise, do not smoke, control your alcohol consumption, maintain a stable weight and use sun protection, you will be able to preserve the results around 10 years, or more.

Depending on the type of facelift, it may include skin tightening on the neck, cheeks, and forehead, fat removal, muscle toning, and skin tightening.

The facelift incisions are hidden under the hairline, the natural contours of the ears and the chin, so they will not be visible. For the first few days, these areas will be swollen and red, but over time they will turn pink and lose their color to become fine white lines.

The first three weeks after surgery care is important to reduce the risk of complications. During that time you should take care of the scars, avoid pressure or sudden movements on and around the incisions, avoid makeup, aerobic activity, intense sports and direct exposure to the sun and you will probably be prohibited from dyeing or getting permanent hair. If you don’t take care of yourself properly, you can suffer bruises, delay healing or suffer from infections.

Risks with a facelift are paralysis of the nerves that control the facial muscles, bleeding, excessive scarring, asymmetry, hairline changes, hair loss, red and raised scars.

These risks are minimized when you put yourself in the hands of a professional in cosmetic surgery such as Dr. Juan Gordillo, a facelift specialist in Guadalajara. Schedule your assessment appointment and rejuvenate your face.
