Male Breast Reduction

Treatment Overview

Gynecomastia is the medical term for breast development in men. It can affect only one breast or both. Although some medications are believed to be related to the development of breast tissue in men, in most cases, the cause is unknown.

For men who want to fix this situation, surgical breast reduction can help with the problem. The purpose of a male breast reduction is to remove fat and/or glandular tissue from the chest and, in rare cases, excess skin. With this procedure, a flatter and firmer chest is achieved, as well as a more apparent masculine pectoral contour. If the nipple is large, it can also be reduced during the same procedure. The most suitable candidates for breast reduction surgery are healthy men under normal weight or slightly above normal weight and with elastic skin.

Procedure

If too much glandular tissue is the main cause of male breast development, this excess is reduced by the pectoral´s liposuction or ultrasonic liposculpture.

The incision will be made in an inconspicuous area; on the edge of the areola or under the arm. Through this, excess skin, fat and glandular tissue will be removed.

As a general rule, the size of the incision will be determined by the amount of fat and glandular tissue to be removed. In cases where liposuction is performed to remove excess fat, in most cases, the liposuction cannula will be inserted through the existing incision.

In cases where the patient’s chest tissue is composed of fat, the plastic surgeon will prefer to use ultrasonic liposuction. In rare cases where large amounts of fat or glandular tissue need to be removed, the skin may not conform to the new, smaller contour after surgery, so it will be necessary to cut away the excess skin.

You can return to work after 4-7 days. Vigorous exercise and sports can be continued after 3-4 weeks. The blood effusion and swelling will usually completely disappear after 3-6 months. Subsequent rehabilitation ultrasonic therapy should be performed.
