What is hair grafting?

Hair transplant or hair implant is an innovative medical treatment, which must be performed by a specialist in order to obtain satisfactory and lasting results. The process consists of taking hair follicles from the donor area of the same patient using the FUE technique; to subsequently implant them in the recipient´s scalp area, so that the empty spaces are covered.

The follicles and hairs are usually extracted from places on the head where it is not frequent for them to fall out, and where the lack of hair will not be visible: the back of the head (nape) and sometimes from the lateral areas.

Before surgery, the surgeon creates a design in the recipient area so that the hair implant looks natural and provides a rejuvenated appearance. The places where the graft is most often performed are the forehead line and the head´s crown, but it can also be done on the eyebrows and beard.

How is the process done?

Hair grafting is a process that is meticulously practiced. First, the specialist will remove the follicles from the scalp one by one using the FUE technique; which usually come out in groups of two or three, and even in sets of four or five. These follicles are the base of the transplant and strips 8 to 10 mm wide are formed with them.

The donor area will be shaved, it will remain between 7-14 days without visible traces of the extraction, since it is covered by the hair that has grown. Subsequently, the follicular units are implanted through small incisions, which do not leave visible scars. The procedure is painless, although it causes some discomfort that is relieved with topical anesthetics or sedation.

Two or three weeks after surgery, it is common for the implanted hair to fall out, leaving its root, the follicular bulb, inside the scalp. This is normal because it is in a period of adaptation and will grow back in a couple of months from the follicle, and will remain in the area as if it were its place of origin, maintaining its strength and resistance because this hair has genetics from the nape that makes it last through time.

Candidates for hair grafting

Before talking about the cost of a hair implant in Mexico, it is necessary to know the type and degree of alopecia, or the condition that is causing the baldness.

Candidates are people over the age of 20 who have suffered from ongoing hair loss, and who have bald spots due to hormonal conditions, androgenic alopecia, or scarring. They are also candidates who have suffered a burn on the scalp that has left bald spots.

It is important to clarify that both men and women are candidates for hair grafting. However, a thorough and personalized assessment is essential since the transplant is not indicated in cases of alopecia in the early stages, meaning, those who continue to suffer from hair loss. It will also not be possible in people with poor or scarce donor areas.

Hair implant effectiveness

By putting yourself in the hands of a specialist, the hair transplant will provide spectacular results, without visible scars, and very long lasting results since follicles that have not been affected by alopecia are chosen.

Now, hair is expected to fall out and grow during the hair cycle, so it is likely to fall out, but it will grow back normally.

The final results will appear 12 to 14 months after implantation, but during this period you will notice how the new hair grows slowly but effectively. Of course, you must follow the instructions for subsequent care, such as not smoking, taking care of sun exposure, washing with the recommended products and avoiding intense sports practice.

Ok, but how much does it cost?

As you may have guessed, each case is different and the treatment is not identical for all. Therefore, it is important to go to an assessment consultation to determine the degree of baldness, estimate the number of hairs that will be implanted per session, the area and time of the procedure.

On average, the cost of hair grafting in Mexico varies between $55,000 and $120,000 pesos, that is, between $2,800 and $6,000 dollars, depending on the clinic you choose.

Why having the procedure in Mexico?
